The scholarship will support students during the crucial time of their final year of studies, covering living expenses such as accommodation costs, food, course items and travel. Each scholarship is worth £4,000 and is open to care leavers in their final year of their undergraduate studies at the University of Westminster.

The generous support from the family of Dr Maud Tyler will ensure that even more students who are care leavers are afforded the opportunity to access higher education without financial pressures and can commit themselves fully to their studies, and other extra-curricular activities available at the University, to reach their true potential.

Dr Maud Tyler retired as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2006 after 35 years at the University. Her life was dedicated to the development of the University of Westminster. The scholarship has been set up in her memory to continue to support students and to allow her work to have a prolonged impact on those who were unable to experience her positive presence at the University.

Talking about the scholarship fund, Maud’s family said: “When we learned of the proposal for a scholarship fund for care leavers, we were delighted to be able to help honour Maud’s wishes.”

Jordan Scammell, Head of Development at the University of Westminster, said: “I had the pleasure of meeting Maud twice before she sadly passed away to discuss her magnificent contribution to life at Westminster and the things that mattered the most to her. Maud had always cared about creating a level-playing field for students from all walks of life, and care leavers were a group of students which particularly interested her. Maud committed to supporting a scholarship for these students, however, she was sadly unable to realise this.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Maud’s surviving relatives to ensure Maud’s wishes were fulfilled. It’s wonderful to see the scholarship now established in Maud’s name. I know she would have been immensely proud. I look forward to working with the scholars and sharing Maud’s story with them.”
